Okay, so I've sort of abandoned the Jesse tree. Sad day!
As it turns out, painting an ornament a day and writing a devotion for each of those days of Advent leading up to Christmas has proven just a bit too much for me this year, on top of two degree programs packed with final projects in the middle of the Advent season. However, fret not! Many of the ornaments are finished, and--with only one degree program next year--I should have enough to post every day in Advent. As a matter of fact, I may just write them in July and set them to post in December, just to get a jump on the game.
And speaking of final projects, my art piece came out of the gas kiln today. I wrapped it up with some gold acrylic paint in the eyes, and then epoxied a small piece back on that had fallen off. Then we photographed it.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you my first ceramics art piece (go easy on me), Put Your Hands Into the Earth. If you're curious about the title, it comes from a Wendell Berry poem.

Okay, so I haven't been so good at keeping you up-to-date on devotions. I'm currently in Kansas City for the weekend, and I've been pretty busy with seminary.

Jesse Tree, Day 3: The First Sin
In the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, when no plant of the field was yet in the earth and no herb of the field had yet sprung up—for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no one to till the ground; but a stream would rise from the earth, and water the whole face of the ground— then the LordGod formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being.
And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there he put the man whom he had formed. Out of the ground the Lord God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. A river flows out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it divides and becomes four branches. The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one that flows around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; and the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one that flows around the whole land of Cush. The name of the third river is Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. The man named his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all living.
And the Lord God made garments of skins for the man and for his wife, and clothed them.

The Jesse Tree symbol for today is...drum roll, please...a tree. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil? Perhaps. The tree of life? Maybe.
I suppose you're expecting me to talk about the first sin as being the setup for the great redemption brought by Jesus's execution on the cross.
That's okay, I suppose.
A lot has been written about "original sin" and such. Entire theologies have been built from such a simple creation story. I would suggest that perhaps, considering the oral tradition that precedes this Genesis account, it might be safe to say that the story makes less of a theological statement, and more of a sociological or anthropological one. No one cares if some misguided couple (misguided by whom? A snake?) ate an apple and were thrown out of paradise at the beginning of time. What we do care about, as we look around us and experience the world as it happens (in "real time," a phrase popularized by Twitter), is why our existence seems so broken, so...off. Why we suffer when we have seemingly done nothing to deserve pain.
The ancient Hebrews had a very different concept of sin than we in 21st century "evangelized" America have managed to conjure up. A closer understanding of sin--to the ancients--might better be described as "missing the mark," or "not measuring up." The second creation story isn't about In Adam's fall, we sinned all. It's about the recognition of human frailty. God doesn't cast the first humans out of paradise because they "sinned." God casts them out because God doesn't want them to attempt to eat from the tree of life and live forever, knowing good and evil. You could possibly take this in two directions: 1) the character of God is jealous of the humans' newfound power and wants to make sure they won't become his rivals, or 2) God sends them away for their own safety. I prefer to believe in the second.
We're still early in Advent--only three days in. Let's get something straight from the beginning: humans are frail. But you already knew that. The story of Adam and Eve reminds us that we are weak, but that God is willing to walk in the garden with us. That we "miss the mark," in our relationships with people and with YHWH, and that we recognize our own nakedness (sometimes more readily on others than ourselves). As we wait expectantly for the coming Messiah, consider what we admire in Jesus: someone who is strong in the broken places, who does not exploit our weaknesses, but instead uses them for the good of God.
It all reminds me of a cheesy old story about a guy driving down the road when he sees a barn covered in bulls-eyes, each with a single arrow in the very center. The man stops and inquires of the farmer how he managed to develop such solid archery skills. "Easy," the farmer replies. He then proceeds to shoot an arrow at the barn, and then paint a bulls-eye around the arrow.
Forget apples. Forget original sin. Give me a Jesus who paints bulls-eyes.

Jesse Tree, Day 2
In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters.

Today was the first day (not counting Sunday) of the Advent season. The Jesse Tree symbol is a dove, or the spirit of God, which moves upon the dark, chaotic waters of pre-creation. In this genesis myth (as opposed to the second, conflicting myth in chapter 2), we find a very structured, orderly creation from nothing. God, in this story, is methodical, intentional, and satisfied with his work.
I've been taking a Hebrew Bible class at Central Baptist Theological Seminary. It's my last class of the semester for the CREATE program. Next semester, I will join my classmates in March on a pilgrimage to Myanmar, and this has given way to numerous daydreams when I should be paying attention in class. For now, however, I remain stuck discussing historicity, and fact vs. truth. Not that I don't enjoy this. Quite the opposite.
In studying the Hebrew scriptures, it's helpful to begin at...well, the beginning. Every story has a beginning. And the Christian story begins where the Jewish tradition begins. In many ways, they are (or should be) inseparable. If you're going to talk about Jesus--a first century radical homeless rabbi who performed miracles and taught revolutionary social and religious philosophies--you've got to talk about Judaism. And if you talk about Judaism, you have to talk about Creation.
The act of creation is fuzed into our essence. The God of Genesis 1 creates because humans create, and this creation is mysterious. Who knows what drives us to create art, to make music, or to appreciate a hilarious piece of nonfiction writing?
Most scholars agree that this first creation story was written by a methodical, "Priestly" source; someone who was concerned with explaining--through storytelling--the existence of the world around us, the magnificent transcendence of our Creator, the establishment of the Sabbath. But it also sets the stage for the greater question found throughout the Hebrew Bible: why do we suffer? Weren't we meant for greater things than this? How can we reconcile the existence of pain and sin (Cain and Abel, anyone?) with this beautiful, transcendent deity who created us in its likeness?
This is all well and good, but what does this have to do with Advent? Yesterday we talked about how Advent is Hope. Today, likewise, we must realize that Advent is Creation. The very word advent means something akin to "coming forth," or "the birthing of something new." Creation. So as we close out the day, reflect on the fact that the God of Creation is not finished Creating, and continues to Create new hearts within us even now. As Creation groans and suffers through birthing pains, know that it is the advent of something new that we wait for expectantly. The sheer act of creation gives us hope for the Next Big Thing--whatever that may be.

Advent: Week One, and an Art Project
I've been working on a really bizarre art piece in ceramics inspired by a line from mewithoutYou's song, "Cattail Down," from their album It's all crazy! It's all false! It's all a dream! It's alright. Don't ask me to explain the piece, but the text covering the stump (the letter stamps were hand-carved from plaster) quotes the line, "You're everyone else," which is repeated over and over and over again throughout the song (a total of 49 times).

Also, today marks the first Sunday of Advent. Alyssa and I have been working on our Jesse tree, and tonight's symbol happens to be the tree itself. The scripture comes from the prophecy (albeit out-of-context) that "predicts" the coming of the messiah (ie. Jesus) from Jesse's family.
The Lord said to Samuel, ‘How long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and set out; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.’ Samuel said, ‘How can I go? If Saul hears of it, he will kill me.’ And the Lord said, ‘Take a heifer with you, and say, “I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.” Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for me the one whom I name to you.’ Samuel did what the Lord commanded, and came to Bethlehem. I don't really believe that these prophecies are necessarily speaking directly about Jesus. But that doesn't really matter. If you're looking through these prophecies simply to say, "Look! Jesus!" you're missing the point. These stories--in their proper context--are about hope. Hope that God is working out a way to "put things to rights," as our friend N.T. Wright says.
And so begins the Advent season. The first (and, I would argue, most important) season on the Christian calendar. It is a time of expectation and heartfelt yearning. A time when, according to Shane Claiborne, Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, and Enuma Okoro, we are to serve as midwives for a groaning Creation struggling to give birth to something new. As we enter into this favorite season of mine, I would urge you to follow me in this exploration of what it means to hope for something--even if it is vague or fleeting.
Alyssa and I have been caught in the doldrums lately. We're stuck in a place where we don't feel very useful or appreciated, and we can't move forward on our dreams of setting up Anavah House until we wrap up what seems like mere busy work here.
If there was no hope, we would have given up months ago--because it's simply not worth it. We've been so run down by the daily grind ("the refrigerator hum," Rob Bell calls it), that we've had little reason to leave the apartment lately.
But something big is coming. In one of my favorite episodes of M*A*S*H, Father Mulcahy writes to his sister (a nun) at Christmas something to the effect of, "It's hard, Sis, when you're running from one disaster to the next. The trick is to keep moving."
The hope is in the motion.

The Great Jesse Tree Adventure
So, Advent is probably my favorite time of the year (aside from, maybe, Holy Week). I was raised in a household that has held the exact same Christmastime traditions for the last 22 years, so "ritual," I would say, has become really important to me.
As Advent approaches, I've been giving serious consideration to making a Jesse Tree, a small tree with hanging ornaments that commemorate some aspect of Jesus's history, from Creation all the way to the birth of the Messiah. Jesse Trees have a pretty diverse background, but--as far as I can tell--have been celebrated since the middle ages.
This evening, Alyssa and I made a short trip to Hobby Lobby to buy the ornaments and the base for the tree. I want to make the actual tree out of limbs, to give it a more rugged, outdoorsy look. Tonight, we drilled the holes and stained the wood.
I'll keep you updated as this project progresses. If all goes well (I'm sure you know how badly I procrastinate), I would like to post a short devotional each night we add an ornament to the tree, starting around the first Sunday of Advent. That way, you folks can celebrate right along with us!
I don't say this often enough, but I love you all.

So, this one time, my pieces took up half the kiln...
Yesterday, we unloaded the gas kiln at the ceramics studio. Since I missed the first round of glaze firing, all of my accumulated wares had to wait for the second round. Because of this, I had nearly 35 pieces: bowls, coffee mugs, and various plates.

Audio Books and All Hallows Eve (eve eve eve)
Sorry it's been so long since I've posted. I've been really friggin' busy, to say the least. I really can't wait for the semester to end--I have far better things to worry about than Human Biology, or "World Food and Society."
In other news, Alyssa and I recently purchased an audiobook copy of Jonathan Safran Foer's Eating Animals. We're planning on going vegetarian after the first of the year, and I really hope that this book will strengthen our resolve to do so. When I was very young, my mom's best friend Emily decided to become a vegan, giving up all animal products and bi-products. Even honey was out. She made this decision after becoming aware of the condition of factory farming and mass meat production in the U.S. In many cases, the treatment of the animals that eventually become our food has surpassed in hideousness the grisly depictions of most horror flicks. And it happens, day-in and day-out, on our watch.
Don't get me wrong, I like meat as much as the next person. But I'm hoping that Foer's book will serve to give us pause, and inspire us to make more conscientious decisions when purchasing our food; anthropocentrism has caused us as a species to disregard the well-being of the rest of God's creation, opting instead to focus on how to make the shekel great. This problem in itself expresses the need--all creation is groaning with labor pains--for not only social justice, but environmental justice, as well.
And that's all I have to say about THAT. *dusts hands off, steps down from soap box*

This problem in itself expresses the need--all creation is groaning with labor pains--for not only social justice, but environmental justice, as well.

On a more jovial note, tonight was also the Baptist Student Center's third annual Halloween party.
I went as "The Son of Man," from Rene Magritte's painting of the same name.
Alyssa went as Sookie Stackhouse from True Blood.
We carved pumpkins. This one's mine:
And we polished off the evening with George Romero's 1968 zombie flick, Night of the Living Dead. By the way, this incredibly creepy film is in the public domain, and is available to watch on youtube:

Just so people know what we're about...
As a new monastic and a lover of almost all things grassroots, I typically shirk at the idea of a rigid "plan" of any sort. But I also see the benefit in providing some sort of concrete evidence of future goals.
So, as part of my Basics of Church Business class I've been taking at Central Baptist Theological Seminary, I present to you Anavah House's vision and mission statements, as well as our core values and goals for the next five years or so. I'd love to hear your thoughts. By the way, we are also officially registered as a "forming community" with the directory of the Fellowship of Intentional Communities. I humbly ask that if you know of anyone in the KC area interested in new monastic intentional living, please let me know!

Vision Statement:
Anavah House exists to love and to serve Jesus Christ by loving and serving our neighbors in authentic Christian community.
Mission Statement:
Our mission is to love and serve Christ and our neighbors by living in community as set forth in Acts 2:44-47, by engaging our neighborhood through community development programs, by cultivating sustainable living as stewards of God’s creation through ecologically dependable methods, and by welcoming all to our community as we would welcome Christ.
Core Values:
- Loving Christ and our neighbor in the spirit of humility and gentleness.
- Holding ourselves to a monastic rule and prayer schedule, as well as practicing the discipline of eating together as a Christian family.
- Seeking social justice for the poor, marginalized, and disenfranchised within the neighborhood community surrounding Anavah House.
- Generating supplemental income for the community through utilization of our God-given gifts of creative skills and craftsmanship.
- Experimenting with ecological sustainability through methods that have been tested in other communities, practicing good stewardship of our bodies and of God’s good creation.
Goals
Phase One (6 months – 1 year)
- Begin to raise awareness about the forthcoming community, scoping out potential co-founders who feel called to live out a new monastic lifestyle at Anavah House.
- Obtain a piece of property capable of supporting 6-8 people (including my wife and I), as well as at least 1-2 rooms suitable for guests, and sufficient space for worship/prayer. The location of Anavah House would most ideally be in a neighborhood of high risk/need in the Kansas City area.
- Register as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to help our sponsors with funding.
- Begin renovating the house to suit the needs of a new monastic community.
Phase Two (1 – 3 years)
- Acquire the knowledge and the volunteers to construct adequate accommodations for small livestock (chickens, ducks, and, with time, possibly even bees), as well as raised-bed vegetable gardens, a grey water waste recycling system, and a system for recycling rainwater for use on our crops.
- Begin encouraging the creation of meaningful art within the community, including the installation of a small ceramics studio.
- Canvass Anavah House’s neighborhood in a non-confrontational way, increasing local awareness of our existence as a safe place to be in fellowship with the neighbors.
- Initiate a partnership with various universities and nonprofit organizations (i.e. Roadtrip Project) to begin an internship program, offering short-term (3 days – 1 week) and long-term (1 – 2 months) internship opportunities to students.
Phase Three (3 – 5 years)
- Implement community development programs beneficial to the neighborhood—the appropriate programs will become apparent with increased understanding of the needs of the community.
- Expand our relational base from the immediate community surrounding Anavah House to a greater area, encouraging local churches and other neighborhoods to get involved in community development programming.
- Devise a novice program for people entering the community in order to gradually acclimate them to the new monastic life.
